Feedstock remains the central determinant of both the economic viability and carbon footprint of biomanufacturing. This review analyzed the evolutionary logic of feedstock transition—from First Generation (food-based) to Second Generation (non-food biomass) and Third Generation (C1 resources)—through the dual lenses of supply chain economics and process engineering. The resource constraints and economic volatility associated with 1G feedstocks, the engineering barriers related to biomass recalcitrance and logistics associated with 2G feedstocks, and the thermodynamic and mass transfer bottlenecks inherent in 3G technologies were examined. Based on a multidimensional assessment, it was concluded that the future landscape will feature feedstock diversification and coexistence of multiple feedstocks. Finally, the paper proposed key developmental pathways, including the reconstruction of distributed logistics systems, deep integration of renewable energy with biomanufacturing, and the standardization of carbon footprint accounting.

A heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) strain,Halomonassp. MY11, with tolerance to high salt and high ammonia nitrogen was successfully screened from a chemical wastewater treatment plant. The growth characteristics and denitrification performance of strain MY-11 were investigated by a one-factor-at-a-time experimental design, and the strain was able to grow and exhibit HN-AD activity under different environmental conditions, and the optimal culture conditions were determined as follows: carbon source of sodium succinate, C/N of 10-18, pH 7-9, shaker speed of 140-220 r/min, incubation temperature of 30-34 ℃, inoculum amount of 1%-5% (volume ratio), and salinity of 2%-8%. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency of the strain for both NH+4-N and NO-3-N reached more than 99% within 30 h. The strain could grow under high-salt (4% salinity) and high-ammonia-nitrogen (1200 mg/L) conditions, exhibited high nitrogen removal efficiency, and could also adapt to various inorganic salt environments. It is demonstrated that strain MY-11 had excellent HN-AD performance and showed significant application value in the field of biological treatment of high-salt and high-nitrogen industrial wastewater.

    Abstract ( 16 )   PDF   Save
This study employed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to acquire spectral data from 160Ganodermaspp. mycelium samples. The β-1,3-glucan content was measured using the aniline blue fluorescence method as the reference value. A predictive model for β-1,3-glucan content inGanodermaspp. mycelium was established based on partial least squares regression (PLSR). After excluding outliers, 150 valid samples were retained. Thirteen characteristic wavelengths were extracted using the competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) algorithm. Five machine learning algorithms were used for modeling, including partial least squares regression (PLSR), back propagation neural network (BPNN), extreme learning machine (ELM), support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF). The PLSR model achieved the highest accuracy (R2=0.946, RMSEP=0.545, RPD=4.303). Predictions and validation of β-1,3-glucan content in 20Ganodermaspp. mycelium samples using this model showed satisfactory accuracy and robustness (R2=0.8425, RMSEP=0.8025, RPD=2.4121, all exceeding 2.4). This study developed a practical β-1,3-glucan assay method, enabling rapid and non-destructive quantitative detection of β-1,3-glucan inGanodermaspp. mycelium samples.

    2026, 43 (5):  27.  doi: 10.3969/j.issn.2095-1736.2026.05.027
    Abstract ( 16 )   PDF   Save
The search for a polygalacturonase suitable for fallen leaf hydrolysis is crucial for accelerating the natural nutrient cycle. This study involved collecting corresponding samples to increase the possibility of obtaining target microorganisms, determining enzymatic characteristics to assess the adaptability of polygalacturonase, and hydrolyzing fallen leaves to measure the application potential of the isolated strain. In the study, a polygalacturonase-producing strain, F21-5, was isolated from decaying fallen leaves and identified asAspergillus fumigatusbased on morphological characteristics and internal transcribed spacer sequence analysis. The obtained F21-5 crude polygalacturonase showed an optimal pH of 5.5, retained more than 80% of its activity within the pH range of 4.0-6.0, and remained stable across pH 3.0-11.0. Furthermore, the enzyme exhibited maximum activity at 60-65 ℃ and maintained stability at 40 ℃. The activity of F21-5 crude polygalacturonase was markedly inhibited by Ca2+ and Cu2+ at the tested concentrations. Hydrolysis of fallen leaves increased the reducing sugar concentration by 503.47%±37.26% in leaves ofMagnolia denudata, 416.07%±0.48% inTectona grandisL.f., 227.03%±0.46% inArtocarpus heterophyllusLam., and 105.60%±0.27% inDracontomelon dao. These results demonstrate thatA. fumigatusF21-5 produces a robust polygalacturonase with strong hydrolytic activity, indicating its potential role in leaf degradation and natural nutrient cycling. Furthermore, polygalacturonase produced byA. fumigatusF21-5 represents a high-potential biocatalyst for industrial-scale pectin bioconversion applications.

    2026, 43 (5):  34.  doi: 10.3969/j.issn.2095-1736.2026.05.034
    Abstract ( 12 )   PDF   Save
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a highly carcinogenic secondary metabolite produced byAspergillus flavus, poses a serious threat to human health and agricultural economic development. CIT, a citrate synthase encoded by thecit1gene inA. flavus, catalyzes the condensation of acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate to form citrate in the first step of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, which is involved in the regulation of eukaryotic development, cell apoptosis, and cancer cell proliferation. To provide new insights for effective prevention and control ofA. flavus, the functions of Cit1 were explored in this study. Bioinformatics analysis indicated thatA. flavusCit1 displayed high similarity to orthologs from otherAspergillusspecies. The deletion ofcit1was constructed using homologous recombination methodology. Phenotypic assays and qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the deletion ofcit1affectedA. flavusdevelopment and pathogenicity. The colony diameter of the Δcit1strain was significantly reduced, and the conidial number and morphology in Δcit1differed from those of the wild type (WT) strain. Sclerotial formation was disrupted in Δcit1. Moreover, AFB1 production in Δcit1was decreased. Pathogenicity toward maize kernels in Δcit1was sharply attenuated compared with that of WT. Collectively, thecit1gene was crucial for sclerotial formation, and was also involved in various biological processes includingA. flavusvegetative growth, aflatoxin biosynthesis, and pathogenicity.

    2026, 43 (5):  43.  doi: 10.3969/j.issn.2095-1736.2026.05.043
    Abstract ( 11 )   PDF   Save
This study focused onEnterococcus lactisFSUH-1 to investigate the characteristics of its γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesis system. It demonstrated that FSUH-1 possessed the ability to produce glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). Potential key functional genes in its genome were amplified, and were verified that FSUH-1 contained the key genesgadAandgadC, which were essential for GABA synthesis in lactic acid bacteria. Bioinformatics methods were employed to analyze and predict the structure and function of the proteins encoded bygadAandgadC. It was found that the GadA protein was a hydrophilic protein without transmembrane regions or a signal peptide, indicating that it was an intracellular protein. It contained the GAD (TIGR01788) domain and was confirmed to catalyze the production of GABA from glutamate. The GadC protein was identified as a hydrophobic protein with transmembrane regions but no signal peptide, and was classified as a transmembrane protein. It contained the GadC (TIGR00910) domain and was predicted to mediate functions such as substrate transport and signal transduction. The tertiary structures of the GadA and GadC proteins were superimposed on and compared with the corresponding protein structures fromEscherichia coliandLactobacillusCGMCC 1306. Results showed that the core regions of their tertiary structures were consistent, indicating that the GadA and GadC proteins in this strain were highly conserved and could mediate the catalytic synthesis of GABA.

    2026, 43 (5):  54.  doi: 10.3969/j.issn.2095-1736.2026.05.054
    Abstract ( 14 )   PDF   Save
Kirengeshoma palmata, an endemic relict plant in East Asia, is a robust perennial erect herbaceous species and is listed as a Class Ⅱ National Key Protected Wild Plant of China. The Anhui Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve represents one of its core distribution areas. However, the current status of theK. palmatapopulation in this area remains unclear. In this study, the current population status ofK. palmatain this nature reserve and its surrounding areas was investigated using the line-transect method. A total of 826 clumps distributed across 67 patches were documented, primarily concentrated in four areas at elevations between 900 and 1400 m. Patches with more clumps tended to occur at higher altitudes. In terms of plant type composition across the four areas, “non-flowering clumps” and “flowering clumps” were dominant, while “Juvenile” and “degenerated clumps” were relatively scarce. The number of branches per clump was mostly between one and three. Key differences among the areas included: a relatively high proportion of degenerated clumps in the Zhanlingwanyuan Area; the Shibalongtan Area predominantly had clumps with 2-3 branches, whereas other areas were dominated by single-branch clumps; the Shibalongtan Area also had the highest average number of flowering branches per clump, while the Xiejia Area had the lowest. In the context of global warming, the cool-preferring biological characteristics ofK. palmataand its limited upward shift within a confined elevation range are likely the primary factors endangering its survival. Corresponding conservation recommendations have been proposed based on this analysis.

    Abstract ( 15 )   PDF   Save
The rapid spread of toxic weeds on grasslands poses a serious threat to the health of grassland ecosystems and the sustainable development of animal husbandry, making it a hot topic in grassland ecology research. Among them, allelopathy is one of the key internal mechanisms for their invasion and expansion. Exploring the allelopathy of toxic weeds on grasslands is of guiding significance for curbing grassland degradation and promoting the ecological restoration of degraded grasslands. This paper reviewed the research progress on allelopathy of toxic weeds on grasslands and briefly summarized their comprehensive utilization. The research found that the main allelochemicals of toxic weeds on grasslands included phenolic compounds and their derivatives, terpenoids and alkaloids, etc. These substances could not only harm grassland ecosystems by inhibiting the growth of high-quality forage and changing soil microbial communities, but also have great potential in the development of new biological pesticides, therapeutic agents and feed applications due to their strong biological activity. Finally, this paper proposed that multi-omics technologies should be integrated to analyze in depth the allelopathy mechanism of toxic weeds on grasslands, promoted their comprehensive development and utilization, and provided new ways for the sustainable development of grassland ecosystems and efficient utilization of resources.

CDC42 GTPase is overexpressed in multiple tumors and drives oncogenic progression by activating signaling pathways associated with cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis. To address the limitations of current methods for detecting cell division cycle 42 (CDC42)activation status, this study developed a high-throughput screening system based on bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET)technology for rapid assessment of CDC42 activation. By coupling CDC42 with renilla luciferase (RLUC)and PAK1 with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), a BRET detection system was constructed. Systematic optimization of protein fusion strategies (N-terminal or C-terminal fusion of RLUC/EGFP)and dual-plasmid transfection ratios (nine combinations)revealed that the combination of CDC42-C-EGFP with PAK1-C-RLUC (9∶1 ratio)significantly enhanced BRET signals, increasing the BRET ratio from 0.05 to 0.25 (4-fold increase), thereby substantially improving detection sensitivity. Using this system, concentration-dependent inhibitory effects of known inhibitors (ML141, ARN25062, ARN24928)were validated. Among these, ARN25062 exhibited the strongest inhibitory potency and also demonstrated the strongest suppression of hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, consistent with cell-based assay results. These findings confirmed that the established BRET system effectively characterized CDC42 inhibitor activity. The optimized BRET-based platform provided a critical tool for investigating CDC42 regulatory mechanisms and developing targeted therapeutics, while offering novel strategies for functional studies and drug discovery of small GTPases (e.g., Rho family proteins).

To address the issue of biochemical degradation of N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) in membrane wastewater, a bacterial strain designated DC-1, which is capable of effectively degrade DMAc, was isolated from the activated sludge of the Guiyang Maijiaqiao municipal wastewater treatment plant. Based on morphological observations, physiological and biochemical characterization, as well as phylogemetic analysis of the 16S rDNA gene sequence, it was identified asArthrobacter protophormiae. The effects of inoculum size, incubation temperature, and pH on the efficiency of DMAc degradation by DC-1 were investigated using a one-factor-at-a-time approach followed by response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken design. The results indicated that the optimal temperature for bacterial growth and DMAc degradation was 29 ℃, the optimal pH was 7.8, and the optimal inoculum size was 13%. Under the optimized conditions, a degradation rate of over 90% was achieved for DMAc at an initial volume fraction of 2% within 144 h. Additionally, the strain exhibited certain degradation capabilities for the structurally similar compound dimethylformamide(DMF). These findings demonstrated that strain DC-1 held considerable potential for the bioremediation of DMAc-contaminated wastewater, particularly in membrane manufacturing industries.

    Abstract ( 11 )   PDF   Save
As a core fundamental course in life sciences, biochemistry has long faced teaching challenges due to its highly abstract theories and complex knowledge system, which often lead to insufficient learning motivation and cognitive overload among students. To address these issues, this study proposed the digital interactive exploratory method (DIEM), a novel teaching model that integrates digital intelligent tools, multi-dimensional interactive mechanisms, and exploratory learning tasks. The study was conducted in the biochemistry course of the College of Life Sciences at Northwest University, where students were divided into an experimental class (DIEM model) and a control class (traditional lecture-based model). The DIEM was implemented through a systematic approach involving “pre-class intelligent guidance, in-class interactive learning, and post-class project-based extension”. Empirical results indicated that DIEM significantly improved the experimental class students’ exam scores, learning interest, collaboration skills, and self-directed learning abilities. This study not only provided a replicable solution for Biochemistry teaching reform but also effectively broke through the cognitive barriers of traditional science teaching, offering theoretical references for educational digital transformation.

    Abstract ( 13 )   PDF   Save
Food biochemistry is a core foundational course for food-related majors, yet its teaching is often challenged by abstract theoretical knowledge, microscopic biochemical processes, insufficient classroom interaction, and weak knowledge transfer. To address these problems, this study constructed a digitally supported progressive teaching model characterized by a “phenomenon-mechanism-application” based on the Chaoxing Learning Platform. Centered on core knowledge modules of food biochemistry, the model integrated resource push, AI-assisted Q&A, multimedia visualization, and virtual simulation into a connected teaching support system across pre-class, in-class, and post-class stages. A comparative teaching study was conducted with the 2024 experimental class and the 2023 control class in the food science and engineering program at Northwest Minzu University. The results showed that the model enhanced pre-class learning, classroom interaction, course assignments, stage tests, and overall course performance, with particularly notable effects on classroom engagement, depth of mechanistic understanding, and knowledge transfer ability. These findings suggested that the digital reform of food biochemistry should be grounded in core disciplinary content and supported by the coordinated use of digital platforms, multimedia technology, AI-assisted learning, and virtual simulation.
