Abstract: A bacterium with strong tolerance to zinc, strain HXZ-1, was isolated from sewage of a paper mill. It could tolerate 1000 mg/L of zinc ion. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and the physiologic & biochemical characteristics, it was identified as Promicromonospora sp. HXZ-1. The culture conditions of strain HXZ-1 were zinc ion concentration of 50 mg/L, glucose as carbon source and peptone as the nitrogen source. When the concentration of zinc ions in cultural liquid was 50 mg/L, the zincic adsorption rate of HXZ-1 reached the maximum of 29.1%; the maximum zincic adsorption rate of strain HXZ-1 run up to 18.8% after cultured 10 h in concentration of zinc ions as 500 mg/L. Strain HXZ-1 had better adsorption effect and tolerance to zinc.
