Abstract:

This article presents the review on the main methods, mechanisms, advantages and problems of removal of dye using algae, focusing on the mechanisms of adsorption and degradation of dyes. The direct and indirect ways of using algal biomass and material are discussed, together with their corresponding scopes and optimal conditions of application. We also discuss the various physical and chemical parameters which affect the efficiency of dye removal, and especially concern the treatment of wastewater containing azo-dyes and the preparation of active carbon using algal residues. Finally, we also point out the problems existing in the field, propose some new ideas and schemes for improving treatment efficiency by combining other physical, chemical and biological techniques, and look forward to the future development direction for the application of algal technology in treatment of dye-containing wastewater. This work may thus provide a useful guidance for further promoting the algal technology and its practical applications.
