he application of MATLAB software in the teaching process of biostatistics——a case study of sampling distribution

摘要: 生物统计是生命科学领域本科学生必修的专业基础课程,是现代农业科学研究和生产中必不可少的工具。抽样分布是统计推断理论的基础,在概率论和推断统计中具有承上启下的作用,但其理论性强、抽象、复杂,使很多初学者难以理解,进而导致对生物统计学课程望而却步,影响教学效果。基于此,将MATLAB软件应用到大学生物统计课程教学过程中,实现课堂实时模拟与结果展示,提升学生的学习兴趣和理解能力,以提高教学效果。介绍了如何利用MATLAB软件设计和编写几种常见的抽样分布——来自一个正态分布总体的 u 分布、t 分布和 χ2分布。软件模拟结果直观地描述了抽样分布,加深学生对总体参数和样本统计量之间关系和抽样分布的理解与掌握,为生物统计学的理论教学提供一种辅助手段。

Abstract: Biostatistics, as an indispensable tool in modern agricultural scientific and production, is a compulsory basic course for undergraduates in the field of life sciences. In biostatistics, sampling distribution serves as the basis of statistical inference theory and plays a linking role in probability theory and inference statistics. However, the abstraction and complexity of the theory causes the difficulty for beginners′ understanding which may further lead to a poor teaching effect. Therefore, it is imperative to apply MATLAB software in the teaching process to enhance students′ learning interest and understanding ability via real-time simulation and display in classroom teaching, and thus improve the teaching effect. In this study, the MATLAB software is introduced to design and compile the simulation of several common sampling distributions, i.e., the u distribution, the t distribution and the χ2 distribution from a normal distribution population. The simulation results that intuitively describe the sampling distribution deepen students′ understanding and mastery of the relationship between the population parameters and sample statistics, and sampling distribution which provides an auxiliary tool for the theoretical teaching process of biostatistics.
