Ecological drivers of morphological variation in the central hamuli of Polystoma monogeneans

摘要: 本研究利用几何形态测量学技术,对寄生在成体为陆栖和树栖类型宿主上的7种多盘虫属单殖吸虫的中央大钩进行形态量化分析。结果显示,多盘虫的中央大钩形态不仅可以作为其物种鉴定的依据之一,更重要的是,它揭示了宿主栖息环境是驱动其中央大钩形态变异的关键生态因子,从而间接印证了寄生虫对宿主的综合适应性过程。本研究不仅通过几何形态测量学方法,填补了无尾两栖类寄生单殖吸虫在陆栖与树栖宿主类群形态适应研究上的空白,也为深入理解宿主栖息环境在寄生虫形态塑造中的驱动作用提供了直接证据。

Abstract: In this study, geometric morphometrics was applied to quantify the morphology of central hamuli in sevenPolystomaspecies parasitizing hosts exhibiting terrestrial or arboreal adult habits. Results showed that central hamulus morphology provided a reliable character for species discrimination. More importantly, the analysis revealed that host habitat—an ecological factor acting directly on the parasite—exerted a significant shaping effect on hamulus morphology, thereby offering indirect evidence for the adaptive processes of the parasite to its host. This work not only addressed the gap in morphological adaptation studies of anuran-parasitizing monogeneans from arboreal and terrestrial hosts, but also contributed to a deeper understanding of host-parasite interaction mechanisms.
